Maritime Radio Day 2021 – Comments by partecipants

Comments MRD 2021

Dear Rolf.

I do hope you had a successful time during the 2 days.

Regretfully I could not participate owing to having all my aerials down due to a cyclone that came thru’ the area. Luckily it came ashore slightly north of us and we were spared any major damage.

We have been without power, mobile phones or internet for 3 days. The town north of us is 75% damaged, very sad to see and we feel for the poor people who are without homes, businesses, but luckily no one was killed.

Again we are so grateful that the worst missed us.

We shall hope to make it next year!!

Best wishes

73’s

Roy, VK6RR

This is my cobweb on the ground and my 20m dipole and 40m trap ant are attached to the tower so are lying down too! I did listen at 1040z on the 15th and faintly heard VK5GG calling on 20m I replied but he didn’t hear me he was only QSA 1 – 2 ! Nothing else was heard.

Rolf,

It was a pleasure to have a chat on air last evening. I appreciate that you and I have been involved in MRD from the start and we are now both in our 80s.

I cannot find any indication of who is now running MRD so could you pass this story on to them please:-

Duke of Edinburgh.

In the week when we in the UK mourn the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh I decided not to use my CW name “Duke”.

This all happened over 55 years ago when I was on board ship as Radio Officer and for exercise would walk the deck sometimes in uniform with my hands behind my back. My shipmates thought it was a little like the Duke of Edinburgh and called me “Duke”.  A fellow R/O came on board in Sydney and later used Duke on 500kcs so it got out.We actually got free drinks in the USA and one American was heard to say “Gee you got a real live DOOK on board” !!

I was and am G3PLE and my father was G3HGI we were both called David so for amateur radio I use the name Duke. But out of respect not for MRD this year.

Really enjoyed first day of MRD.

Hello Rolf

We had poor band conditions, weak sigs and much QSB.

Hello Rolf!

I´m sending my log of MRD´21. From yesterday I´ve checking all bands and QRGs without success but, incredibly, yesterday I´ve QSO with M0UNN on 14MHz 599 and today with F5IN on 21MHz also 599 but nobody playing “MRD”.-
I can´t undertsand what happen because I called CQ MRD on all the bands but NIL, frequencies were empties, only band noise.

Thinking bad condx North/South today at 21.00UTC I checked by Internet several SDR in Europe and USA looking for CW MRD calls on 21,14 and 7mHz but nobody was doing it.-

As in 2020, in Argentina we are only 3 HAMs ex Maritime Service fighting MRD, but I encouraged two mates (one lady & one old man) for MRD´22.-

Thanks for all, best regards & 73DX.-

Good morning Rolf,

Very pleased to QSO with you during MRD yesterday. I’ve attached the logsheets for GB0GKB which operated on 20m and 40m only (I don’t have antenna for 30m/80m and 10m/15m were dead).

Thanks a million guys. Beautiful certificate.

Kind regards,

Rolf, I hope you are keeping well.

MRD was poor again due to conditions. On the first day (14th ) few stations of any kind were to be heard.

but on the second day (15th ) in the morning the Greek stations were all over the band but in the afternoon

of the 15th, German stations began to appear. Propagation was strange to say the least, German station are

normally heard quite a lot, but this time not until the afternoon of the second day. As I say propagation.

All the best

È molto emozionante collegare i nominativi di stazioni costiere non più ‘in aria’, ma malinconico nello stesso tempo. Tante stazioni di Marconisti collegate compresa DL9CM , bellissima esperienza per me.73 de ik8ggu

I am very sorry that this year the condx were so poor that I could’not contact any extra-europeen station, though I spent a lot of time calling on 14 and 21 MHZ. Nevertheless I enjoyed the MRD and some good chats. See you next year … if I can as I am 86 … F6FSF / Luc

Hello Rolf,

I am an ex Merchant Marine Radio Operator from the 1960’s

I worked for Marconi Marine on British merchant shipping.

Two year trips in those days.

I am on HRMC mailing list to keep an interest alive.

I do not have a radio receiver capable of listening to marine frequencies but thought I would contact you to wish you well and hope the open day goes well.

Dear Rolf Marschner,

I attach 2 files for the log about my participation on the MRD.

First, I would like to thank You for this wonderful initiative and

my apology if my log is not adequate enough. I have tried to

download the formatted one from the MRD site without success.

I only get an error message, no matter which kind of web browser

I use. If there is another way to send the log in a more appropriate

way I shall gladly comply. My best regards.

Thankful

Hallo Rolf,

Thank you for the MRD activity last week, I really enjoyed it.

I have only been on the air since August 2020, even though licensed in 1989 (long story) and have to say it’s the most enjoyable activity I have entered into.  A very friendly activity and I had several QSO’s with R/O’s who remember the good days when working GKA.  I was at GKA in 1980/81.

I have attached my log from the event .. hope it’s ok.

And I am now already looking forward to the event next year.

Hello Rolf,

I guess comments are requested.

Put this.

So happy to join MRD 2021.  Thanks to Alfredo, IK6IJF, Rolf, DL9CM, Guiliano, I1SAF, Olivier, F6DGU (SK), and David G3PLE for starting this so many years ago, because it has produced lots of enjoyment for ex- radio officers on ships and coast stations.

I worked more stations in Europe than in the USA, I only worked K6KPH in USA, the rest were in Europe, I listened for AUS/NZ but I did not hear any signals from there.

Maybe I will work more friends next year?  I hope so.

You are all welcome to join the radio-officers google group. http://groups.google.com/group/radio-officers and/or the Radio-Officers FaceBook group.

73 to all, especially Rolf, Alfredo, Guiliano, and David.
