Marine Radios – MAGNETI MARELLI MF W/T Transmitter Mod. TS40

Article by Radio Officer Sergio Sarti (Italy)

On board Italian M/V SANDALION with TS40 transmitter:

The Magneti Marelli TS 40 transmitter was a modern medium-power radiotelegraphic transmitter which met international and national standards for installations on ships of gross tonnage over 1600 tons. It was enabled for emission in both A1 and A2 on five quartz frequencies included in the 365 – 535 kHz band.

A conveniently designed switching system allowed the passage from one frequency to another in less than 5 seconds. The  antenna tuning system  was able to allow the use of this transmitter with antennas of a very different types, including an emergency antenna of reduced dimensions.

A series of instruments, one of which switchable, allowed the continuous control of the efficiency of the various stages of the apparatus.

The execution on a panel that could be completely folded away from the cabinet allowed a quick and complete inspection of the whole apparatus for replacement, calibration and repairs.

General features:

Operation on five quartz frequencies 425, 454, 468, 480, 500 kHz,

Self-excited quartz crystal oscillator,

Frequency stability better than 0.1%,

A1 and A2 emission modes (telegraphic service only)

Levels of power output, Maximum 300 Watts, average 150 Watts and reduced about 40 Watts,

Tuning system always for the maximum current in the antenna.
