Marine Transmitter – Standard Radio & Telefon AB ST 450-X

I want to show you a very good transmitter I had in 1973 on board of the liberian tanker Noto/ ELXZ, a former norwegian flag vessel. It is the main trasmitter ST 450-X made by Standard Radio & Telefon AB with a power output of 400W on MF and HF and a reduced power of 100W on 2182 Khz. The peculiarity of this transmitter was that it had a 3 completely separated sections, each with the own final stage, for MF, CT coastal telephony and HF.

Practically the same solution used also by Elektromekano that mounted instead the 3 sections horizontally one upon the other, but in this case the three sections are mounted vertically next to each other. You see the MF panel on the left, the CT panel in the middle and the HF panel on the right side. Each panel had a small window through wich you could see the final tube, that, if I remember well, were the 813 type but I am not sure.

It was an AM equipment and the transmission modes available were A1, A2 and A3. The three sections shared of course the power supply and the modulator that were located in the lower part of the equipment.

I have no further details of other technical specifications and I must add that I have never found afterwards any information about this Tx on technical magazine nor I have never heard any colleague mentioning it.

Therefore I was really surprised when a norwegian R/O last year wrote an article about the norwegian coast stations among which there is a picture of Tjome Radio/LGT showing this same transmitter. If you scroll down the page News until april of last year you will see that, although partially covered by other equipments, it is exactly the same transmitter with only some slight difference, as for example the position of the band switch that is not placed in the middle between the four meters. Maybe a previous model or a specially made one for using in a coast station.
